Privacy
This statement describes the information the atelier collects from inquirers, subscribers, and patrons, the purposes for which the information is used, and the conditions under which it is retained or disclosed. The statement was last revised on the date noted at the foot of this page and supersedes any previous statement on this site.
Information collected
The atelier collects the name, postal address, electronic mail address, and any details of the requested commission that an inquirer chooses to provide on the inquiry form or in correspondence by post or by electronic mail. Where a subscription to the weekly word is requested, the atelier collects only the electronic mail address. Where a subscription to a panel cadence is paid by bank transfer, the atelier collects the name shown on the transfer and the date and amount of the transfer. The atelier does not collect any other identifying or financial information, and in particular does not store payment card details.
Purpose of collection
The information is collected for the sole purpose of answering inquiries, fulfilling commissions, posting completed work to the patron, sending the weekly word to those who ask for it, and maintaining the workshop ledger in which every commission that has left the workshop since 1946 is recorded. The information is not used for marketing, is not used for analytics, and is not used to construct profiles of any kind.
Disclosure
The atelier does not sell, lease, or share the information with any third party, with the single necessary exception of the postal carrier and the electronic mail service that delivers the weekly word, both of which see only what is required to deliver the commission or the message. The information is also disclosed to the bank for the purpose of receiving payment, and to the civil tax authorities of the country in which the atelier is registered, and only to the extent required by law. No information is transferred outside the country of the atelier except where it is necessary to deliver a commission to a patron resident abroad.
Retention
The workshop ledger is permanent and records the patron, the subject, the date of writing, and the date of delivery of every commission. Inquiry correspondence is retained for seven years and is then destroyed by burning. Electronic mail is retained for three years and is then deleted. Payment records are retained for the period required by law. Subscriber addresses for the weekly word are retained until the subscriber asks to be removed, and are then deleted within thirty days.
Cookies and tracking
This site sets no cookies. It does not use analytics. It does not embed third party scripts. It does not contain advertisements. The site logs the date and the country of every page request for the purpose of detecting attacks; the logs are kept thirty days and are then discarded.
Rights
An inquirer, subscriber, or patron may request a copy of the information the atelier holds about them, may request that the information be corrected if it is wrong, and may request that the information be deleted, subject only to the permanent record kept in the workshop ledger. Requests are sent by post or by electronic mail to the address on the contact page and are answered within thirty days.
Contact
Any question concerning this statement is sent to the address on the contact page, marked, on the envelope or in the subject line, "concerning the privacy statement."
